History

AnagaThe name of Anaga comes from the Guanche Menceyato de Anaga (Kingdom of Anaga) which existed before the Spanish conquest.

Tenerife was divided into nine menceyatos, Anaga being the most eastern, each of them led by a Mencey or Guanche king. Beneharo was the leader of Anaga. This area of the island is one of the richest archaeological reserves in the Canaries.

Numerous Guanche remains have been found. In fact, the majority of Guanche mummies found in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife originate from this area of the municipality.
